Two really important questions

So what? Now what?

There are probably no more important questions to ask when a change or transformation is announced.

Let’s start with so what?

When an announcement of a significant change is made, maybe a transformation, it is usually light on for context and detail. We are having an organisational restructure. We are going to deploy a new technology solution. We are moving the office.

But until and unless we have that extra context and detail, we are focusing on the future state without enough focus on the here and now. And so we ask – so what? What does this mean for our colleagues? For our customers? For our suppliers? For our reputation? Why are we doing this? When is this going to happen? In keeping with last week’s post – what’s in it for them?

And then now what?

Once we know the so what, we can start to formulate the next steps – the now what. This is where an action plan should be designed for the program of work, which of course, includes the development of a plan for leading the change or transformation.

So what and now what?  Ask both questions and in that sequence. Without that information, any change action plan will be light on detail and hard to lead.
