As you have probably worked out by now, we are not great fans of the traditional, heavily documented, overly methodical approach to Change Management – in fact, we are much bigger fans of Change Leadership than Change Management.
But we digress.
I am amazed by the number of people who tell me about their BIA (Business Impact Assessment) or their TNA (Training Needs Analysis) and showing me a spreadsheet.
These are not Business Impact Assessments or Training Needs Analyses. They are summaries of what I assume is a thorough and comprehensive activity that involves conversations with impacted colleagues and their leaders.
The other piece that is often missing, especially when considering the BIA activity, is what I would describe as a Business Impact Action Plan. While there is obviously enormous benefit in knowing and understanding the impact that any proposed change or transformation is going to have on both the business and the individuals, the real outcome of these activities is the impact action plan. Don’t tell me who and how much the proposed change / transformation is going to impact – tell what you are going to about it.
