Remember when innovation was … well, innovative?
In the same way as transformation seems to get used to describe big change, innovation seems to have been hijacked by people who have a good idea.
Here’s what innovation isn’t:
- Doing what your competitor does – that’s copying
- Doing something that works in another part of your company – that’s leveraging
- Changing the packaging on one of your products – that’s changing the packaging
Innovation involves doing something in a totally new way, impacting your business or business sector so significantly that things will never be the same again.
Here are some examples of what innovation is:
- Henry Ford’s assembly line
- Music delivery via CDs – then music delivered via stream and digital download
- Video conferencing allowing people to work from just about anywhere
Innovation only occurs when people are given the space and encouragement to dream. To imagine. To think radically.
Is your organisation ready for innovation? We’ll be talking about something new ourselves soon. Is it innovative? You’ll have to wait and see.
