I drive a medium sized SUV which according to the specifications has a front windscreen and three rear vision mirrors. The total area of the front windscreen is around 25 times bigger than the total combined area of the three rear vision mirrors. This doesn’t take into account the size of the side windows that also allow me to see even more of what’s ahead of me rather than what’s behind me.
In business, we tend to spend a lot of time looking behind us and not enough looking forward. We have end-of-month reviews, we pore over spreadsheets looking at trends based on last month and last quarter and even this time last year.
I am not saying that there is no value in looking back but – are we spending enough time looking forward?
Setting future strategies that are transformaginative rely on letting go of the past. By all means use it as a reference point and as a driver to do things very differently.
But don’t spend too much time looking back. You might drive past the exit … or worse.
